A3C Saturday night “The Release” at the Icehouse

As I walked in, 3 of the best female MCs in the city were commanding the stage as the crowd waved their hands in rhythm with the beat. From stage right, Adrift Da Belle tore it up.  Rita J and Boog Brown had everybody in the audience ready to party by 10 o’clock. Meanwhile, back stage, Senor Kaos and his supporting all star cast were preparing for their set. After a warm round of applause for the first ladies of Atlanta hip-hop, D.R.E.S. the Beatnik came out to hype the people up for the fellas. Upon his intro, Kaos took the stage with the confident stride of an MC who knew his show was going to be hot. With DJ Grandman at his back, along with Flux on the other mic, the show started with a bang. He brought out 4-ize and Punchlyne and the show went up a level. Soon after… Killa Kalm stepped to the stage and took it up yet another level. The show continued to build as Kaos and friends rocked songs ranging from “Girls Rock Too” to “Automatic Classic”. He also rocked some joints from his new release, “Walk Softly and Carry a Big Brick”. It was a carefully crafted show full of pristine talent and well written songs. The participation of the large crowd was also impeccable. Continue Reading

A3C Afternoon Delight at 529 East Atlanta

This hip-hop festival keeps getting better and better. Mars Ill and Psyche Origami brought top notch afternoon sets on a beautiful fall day in East Atlanta. I was lucky enough to catch them both.

First was Mars Ill. Nobody gets a crowd involved like Manchild. He had them eating from his hand within 2 songs, and once again validated his reputation as Atlanta’s best MC. DJ Dust backed him solidly in his own understated manner. Continue Reading

A3C Friday night at the 529

Early in the evening I stopped by the Blue Frog Cantina to catch the listening party for The Fresh’s “Ziplock Tight” listening party. Shot-J and Mic Masters (SHOUTS TO DAINJA!) had some copies on hand of their latest release and were generous enough to break me off with a copy. After one listen, I am sold. It holds up to the quality we’ve come to expect from these artists. If you like interesting well spit lyrics and unique beat production with top shelf sound quality, this is a cd that belongs in your collection.

A bit later, I posted up at the table in the front of this hot spot, 529, with some good friends and watched the steady stream of hip-hop traffic flow in and out of this rustic venue. The event, promoted by MOJO Swagger was called “I wear the crown”. There were DJs, beat boxers and dance crews b-boy quic & Funk Lordz doing their thing as the featured artists trickled in. Throughout the evening there would be an ongoing MC battle for a prize package worth $2500. Continue Reading
