Our podcast is proud to welcome Mr. Fish on the release week of his new mix-tape, “Everything You Know is Wrong”. We sat down at Joe’s coffee shop in East Atlanta to discuss music and his career. It was an insightful chat as this hungry artists/producer charts his course for success in the music industry. He brought along some of the most uniquely appealing music I have heard in a while as well as some insightful knowledge and experiences.

Makin’ beats on the iphone?

Yes, it is true. I was on a short flight last week from DC to ATL and had recently downloaded the “Groove Maker” app. I thought since I had some time to kill I would give it a shot. It has a simple user interface and a nice palate of sounds that had me lost in my headphones for those two hours. The time ‘flew’ by and by the time we were ready to land, I had a new beat. I was able to transfer the file to my laptop as a wave file quite easily and was surprised at the quality. This beat actually has some bang!

Here is what came out of my iphone… unbelievable.

That “classic” hip-hop sound

Grain, Groove and Vibe combine to create that classic hip-hop sound that defined the genre for so many years. We all know that many of the classic beats come from vinyl samples, but it wasn’t the records alone that gave the beats that rough and raw sound. Lots of those samples we recorded using 8 or 12 bit machines giving them that low resolution “grungy sound”.
