A Barrage of Beats

ATL downtown was a battlefield on Tuesday night as eight well armed producers wrecked hip-hop havoc on stage and each other with their beats. On stage stood two stools; each with a pioneer CDJ player sitting on top. The host of the evening informed the crowd and contestants of the simple rules. He also had a mic with a built in db reader to measure crowd noise as they voted with their cheers and applause.

The first two producers to face off in round one were DT of Clan Destined and Mr Fish. While DT took the first beat, Fish came with very eclectic rhythms on beats 2 and 3 that the crowd loved… and he advanced to the 2nd round. “Maybe I should have brought some more people out, or just hit em’ with another banger”, DT said.

Takin’ it to the soul school

I am looking to do a little expansion on my sound library as I gear up for the next couple months of intense production time. I stumbled across this little gem on my search, and I think I am going to get it. The sounds on this reason refill have a real human feel to them, and it seems really versatile. Check it out…

Kato Reasons things out

The Georgia State University marketing student/producer prepares for his set by stetting up his mac laptop, hard drive, m-audio fast track pro interface, and 25 key controller on a small bar table in the middle of Blue Frog Cantina’s modest dance floor. A handful of the many talented artists for which he has produced beats is on hand to perform live versions of their collaborations. He loads up the Reason projects that he will be sharing with the “Friday Night Collective” crowd and hits play. The layered drums, the rumbling bass, and the tasty keys grab the attention of the audience as they gather around Kato and his mobile beat machine.

The producer’s set has begun. He talks us through his process as he mutes and solos tracks and explains how the various instruments come together into a song. As Kato is doing this, Mic Masters and Shot J of the Fresh take the microphones for their first ever live performance of “Easy Come Easy Go” from Vol. 1 of Kato’s production mix-tape series “T.I.M.E.”. Listen to the strings on this beat. SICK!
