The crowd started flowing into the Atlanta room at Smiths Olde Bar as SIMP sat at a table and causally sipped his red wine as he chatted with a fan. DJ Sky was gracing the turntables as the audience slowly began to warm up from the cold evening air. Once he took the stage, there was no turning back. He gracefully moved through his set with a relaxed energy that became increasingly contagious. The vibe of the room was intimate, yet the performer seemed larger than life as he commanded the attention of the audience. SIMP has found his stage presence, and his fans in attendance were obviously appreciative.
The Jamiroquai cover band, Travelling Without Moving, took the stage immediately after SIMP’s set. The party continued to build throughout the night until it had reached a full frenzy of shaking boodies and funky grooves.
I caught up with SIMP after the show. He said, “the purpose of this show for me was to get a new audience acquainted with SIMP and to polish up our show for the push of ‘The Challenger’ mixtape. We added a lot of new elements and made this show more intimate for the Smith’s Olde Bar setting. Performing in Smith’s was like performing in someone’s basement in front of friends. It was a great atmosphere for the type of show that I like to put on for my audience. The combo of SIMP and DJ Sky came together exceptionally well. The chemistry of that entire night was electric. Speaking of electric; Adam Knight joined me on stage for an old school rendition of Biggie’s ‘Juicy’ and Ice Cube’s ‘Today Was A Good Day.’ We definitely accomplished our mission, and I do not say that in premature George Bush fashion”, he laughs. “We solidified a solid set list and gained some new fans. I can’t wait to do another show at Smith’s.”
