It’s been a long time since the ATL Flood of ‘09 and the music is finally bumpin’ against these four walls once again. It feels good to be powered back up in the Beat Studies Lab.
DJ Sky (your friendly neighborhood DJ) is in the house for a rehearsal that is in preparation for SIMP’s Friday night (Jan.15) performance opening for “Travelling Without Moving” (A Jamiroquai Tribute Band) at Smiths olde Bar (Alanta room).
SIMP is primed and ready to deliver with a fresh supply of dope rhymes and as I type, he stumbles over his lyrics LOL. Good thing we’re practicing. Nah, he is definitely in a good position to deliver a pristine performance of songs mostly from “The Challenger”. SIMP has also been on the Sade tip lately and one of her songs, Jezebel, smoothly makes its way in to the set. He and DJ SKY also take us back to the old skool for a minute. Here is a short video clip… SIMP and DJ SKY reherseal
We make some set list adjustments and are on to the dress rehearsal. To hear the songs come together in live the mix builds tremendous anticipation. The songs blend with seemingly effortless grace. This DJ and Emcee combination works nicely. They have chemistry that will surely translate into a poppin’ live set.
DJ SKY
SKY shares his recollection of a beat he produced back in 2000. The main sample, ironically, came from the very Sade track that they were rehearsing for this show. Sky said, “I don’t make beats very often but I did one back in 2000 using a sample from that song. Sade is my angel of soul”, he continued,” so I have to include her in my productions of life. I scratched out the narration through different storybook records to take the listener on a journey through three depths of my soul represented in the ocean, the sky and space. You can hear the transitions in the song from when your changing from those depths.”

DJ SKY “The Depths of My Soul”
He even has graffiti in his house, based on this song, by artist Teach 2 to this day. All the effects are done through traditional turntable-ism including volume fader echos. Not only is he an extremely technical and skilled record cutter, I think it’s safe to say that SKY is a pretty deep dude as well.
