The Famishment of Ekundayo

Ekundayo the Mountain Liun first came to the beat studies lab in 2007 to record his verse for the first “16 bars of gold”.  He seemed exhausted from lack of calories and was anxious to get the session over with so he could go get some food. However, in one glorious take, he came to life and dropped one of the illest verses ever to grace the diaphragm of my AKG condenser microphone. Take a listen…

He is back with another hot 16 freestyle on Vol.2 that is a reminder of what raw, stripped down, lyrical hip-hop really is.

Ekundayo runs with a group of talented hip-hop artists known as the L.I.U.N.S. Den and they are currently promoting their latest album “When Liuns Attack” and it is produced by Kwezorro the Latin Liun. The hunger of this group is evident from track 1 throughout. The cover art is another fine work by Goldi Gold. Here is a taste of this new release with the track “Whats The Matter With People”. It features Ekundayo, Luz Wed, Spice and Actual Flame. FIRE!

As it is with all of the great cats, this crew constantly has their minds on their next meal. Even though “When Liuns Attack” still has allot of fresh meat on the bone, they are already looking ahead to their next project.

I caught up with some of the crew after a recent performance at the Atlanta Bench. “Liun’s Den is on some international shit”, said Ekundayo. “We are about to do this ‘nice and decent crew’ cd. It’s about to be silly yo, reminiscent of some 80s reggae like Yellow Man, like eekamouse. The vibes we were building about it’s like, that’s our soul music. We grew up here in the states, but our peoples is from the West Indies and like, when we was commin’ up, the music that they played was like Al Green and others from here but our soul music is the music from the West Indies, so we are looking to blend that and chop it up in our own style.” Luz Wed and Thunda Kat were also present representing the mighty L.I.U.N.S. den that night and I asked Thunda (also featured on 16 bars vol. 1) about the ‘Nice and Decent Crew’ project and he said, “you got to take it back to the origin, you know what I mean, give thanks to where it really came from.” Be on the lookout for this island driven hip-hop to drop sometime in 2010.
